LGBTI+ activists discussed the relation between activism and local governments in Kaos GL’s Activism School on Local Governments.

In the second session of the first day of the Activism School on Local Governments, participants were asked what they are doing in relation with local governments. In the moderation of Damla Umut Uzun from Kaos GL, participants from seven different cities told about their experiences with municipalities.

Ayşe Girgin from Equality Unit of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality told about their progress in the process of being LGBTI+ inclusiveness:

“The name of our unit was “Equality Unit for Women and Men” at first, but as a unit working on LGBTI+ rights we belive that the equality should not only be for women and men. In this context, we have been trained by Kaos GL many times, and accordingly we also organized a training on gender equality issues. Later on, we also provided publication support to our staff for raising their awareness on LGBTI+ issues. The main problems of us to reach the higher-level-authorities within the municipality, so we expect support from NGOs that if we would demand together it would be more effective.”

Seçin Tuncel from Kaos GL told about the importance of the first communication with local governments, and added that if we multiply such communication channels, we would request for our demands more easily.

A representative from Social Project Department of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality mentioned their experiences in working with people with disabilities and children:

“Most of the time, their families forgot about the sexuality of people with disability, or they just ignore. When we give a training on sexuality or in the field of LGBTI+, they simply reject it. Therefore, I can say that it is very hard to work with people exposed to multiple discrimination. At the end of this event, I hope that special and concrete works for people disability would come out.”

After the experience sharing of the LGBTI+ human rights defenders coming from many different cities, a SWOT analysis for the organizations working with municipalities has been conducted by the facilitation of Murat Köylü from Kaos GL.
