Three concurrent solo exhibitions consisting of all-new works by Bahar Yürükoğlu, Murat Akagündüz and Şener Özmen will take place at Arter from 30 March to 15 May 2016.
Şener Özmen
Bahar Yürükoğlu’s exhibition “Flow Through” takes as its departure point the artist’s experiences during her travels to the Arctic Circle in 2015. In her artistic production, Yürükoğlu experiments with light, space, and colour; and her exhibition on Arter’s ground floor will feature installations, videos, photographs and sound that blur the boundaries between the natural and the artificial.
Murat Akagündüz’s exhibition “Vertigo” presents a new series of white on white oil paintings depicting some of world’s highest mountain peaks as seen on Google Earth. Relying on digital data to depict nature, Akagündüz refers to the transformation of the human-nature relationship with the advancement of technology.
Şener Özmen’s exhibition “Unfiltered” revolves around platforms that allude to a vernacular architectural wooden form, used in hot climates to spend summer nights outdoors. In the allocated space, these wooden structures function as planes for revisiting desires or creating new memories; and with this exhibition, Özmen explores the ways in which an artist might escape a recognised and fixed identity.

Bahar Yürükoğlu’s exhibition takes as its departure point the artist’s experiences during her travels to the Arctic Circle in 2015, both in the summertime, when the sun doesn’t set, and during the winter months, when darkness prevails. In this exhibition, she creates fictional spaces based on the dualities she observed in the Arctic region; tackling presence and absence, past and future, and nature and civilisation, mining towns and advanced-technology science villages. Drawing its inspiration from melting icebergs and polar bear postcards, the exhibition opens up to the viewer’s experience Yürükoğlu’s installations combining light, colour, and sound.
Murat Akagündüz: Vertigo

Murat Akagündüz’s exhibition presents a series of white on white oil paintings depicting some of world’s highest mountain peaks as seen on Google Earth, and explores the transformation of human-nature relationship within the landscape tradition. How is the act of painting transformed when we rely upon the mediation of digital data to depict an actual physical landscape? In a satellite view of the earth, the paintings represent a vertical perspective; with the horizon nowhere to be found, our sense of being grounded is disrupted, and a sense of vertigo sets in.

Şener Özmen's exhibition tackles the concept of “recognition”, and expands into the artist’s individual “demands and desires” which arise following the process of being recognised. Exploring the position of the artists who have been associated with a fixed social identity, the exhibition is structured around platforms that allude to a vernacular architectural wooden form used in hot climates to spend summer nights outdoors. In the exhibition, these pieces function as planes for revisiting desires and creating new memories.
