Human Rights Joint Platform, Kaos GL Association and TACSO organized a conference last week in Ankara on anti-discrimination and equality on the way to the European Union.

The conference focused on anti-discrimination legislations and implementations of good examples in candidate countries and EU members on Thursday.

Different groups in Turkey combating discrimination shared their experiences on the following day. Attorney Hayriye Kara from Kaos GL Association, Feray Salman from Human Rights Joint Platform and Sema Kendirci from CEDAW Shadow Report Committee talked about the challenges and strengths in their fields. The sessions continued with talks on Roma people’s rights and Human Rights Initiative for Mental Health.

Umut Guner from Kaos GL Association stated the importance of the TACSO conference for LGBT people as follows:

“As Kaos GL, we made a call for the inclusion of ‘sexual orientation and gender identity’ in the Draft Law on Anti-Discrimination and Board of Equality. Since 2007, we’ve been demanding that law in our reports on the human rights violations of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people.”

LGBTI activists from the Balkans, the Middle East, North Africa and South Caucasia participated the first day of the conference and then joined in the 6th Regional Network Meeting held by Kaos GL Association.
