Chair of Council of Higher Education (YÖK) of Turkey, Prof. Dr. Yekta Saraç said: “We cannot be related with any abbreviation like LGBTI.”

On 24th February, Orhan Bursalı, one of the authors of Cumhuriyet Newspaper, wrote an article criticizing the termination of Gender Equality Project by Council of Higher Education.

After, Chair of Council of Higher Education (YÖK), Prof. Dr. Yekta Saraç passed his opinion about the article, Bursalı added them to the end of his article published on 26th February.

Remarking in the note that there is no compromise in the society on gender equality concept, Saraç has told that there would not be any changes in the previous content after the Project termination:

“Our only aim is to end oppression, violence and harassment through women in Academy, and to increase women’s visibility in Academy. We don’t have any hesitation about that. However, we cannot be related with any abbreviation like LGBTI.”

YÖK cancelled gender equality project

The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) has previously announced that it cancelled the "Higher Education Institutions Gender Equality Project." The project was issued to the universities by the YÖK in a "document of stance." YÖK also removed the document from its website.

YÖK Chair Yekta Saraç said the meaning assigned to the project was "not suitable with their social values".

The Ministry of National Education also cancelled their Gender Equality Project in January. The project was conducted from 2014 to 2016.
