CHP Vice President Gökçen: Hate crimes should be effectively investigated Kaos GL - News Portal for LGBTI+

Republican People's Party (CHP) Vice President Gökçen made a written statement about the increasing hate speech and violence against LGBTI + people.

Gökçen said, “We see that the violence against LGBTI's increased significantly during the pandemic period and the pride month we were in. Complaints received by non-governmental organizations almost doubled during this period, while two physical, one verbal assault were recorded in the past three days” and called attention to hate speech.

"LGBTI+’s are being targeted ever-increasingly as impunity for the discriminatory discourse continues"

Reminding the Kaos GL Association's "Homophobia and Transphobia Based Hate Crimes in Turkey in 2019 Report", Gökçen said that on two-thirds of the homophobia and transphobia based hate crimes the perpetrators consist of two or more people.

"LGBTI+’s are being targeted ever-increasingly as impunity for the discriminatory discourse continues or even supported. Hate speech and hate crimes should be effectively investigated. It is a shame for all of us that even defending everyone's right to life in 2020 is seen as a 'sensitive' issue."
