Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs responded the questions about LGBTI+s with hate speech: “It’s not normal, pathologic, a destroying sin, organic defect and it is not a right, but superstition!
Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs receives questions via e-devlet application which is the official application providing state services. These questions are replied by Religious Affairs High Commission under Religious Affairs Administration.
Recently, Religious Affairs replied the question asking the attitude of Islam to LGBTI+s with a hate speech saying “not normal and not coming from the birth”, pathologic”, “exceeding the limit” and “a destroying sin”.
Question: “What is the attitude of Islam to LGBTI+s?”
Following questions were asked to Religious Affairs:
“What is the attitude of Islam towards LGBTI+s? How should Muslims treat LGBTI+s?”
“In the occasions where prayers are separated in accordance to their gender, what should transgender and intersex people do?”
“What are the responsibilities of Religious Affairs in any kind of discrimination against LGBTI+s in sanctuaries?”
Answer: “Not normal, but a sin to be avoided”
Underlining the binary gender system, Religious Affairs emphasized that having sexual desires among same sex people are “not coming from birth and normal”.
Reflecting their homophobia and transphobia, Religious Affairs also told in their answer that being in a same sex relationship overstep the limits and it is a destroying sin. For transgender people, they used expressions like “man who thinks himself as woman” and “woman who thinks herself as a man”, and they suggest transgender and gay people to be treated psychologically.
While Religious Affairs used “sexual deviation” for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people, for intersex people they said “organic defect” in their answers.
