Kaos GL launches a new program called ‘Wednesday Workshops’.
Kaos GL adds a new one to its events so far in order to make academy/university and practice meet and create a new paradigm with each feed the other. ‘Wednesday Workshops’ will be held on every Wednesday at 18:30 in Kaos Culture Center.
‘Wednesday Workshops’ will begin with the presentation of Elif Ceylan Özsoy, a legal advisor of Kaos GL magazine, on the topic of ‘Hate Speech and Hate Crimes’.
From ‘Wednesday Workshops’ to ‘Kaos Academy’
Making a statement about the program and inviting everyone to contribute and participate in these workshops Kaos GL, indicated they hope that ‘Wednesday Workshops’ will evolve to an academy(‘Kaos Academy’).
’Academy’ is one of the most essential topics for Kaos GL.
It is known that ‘academy/university’ has been one of the most essential topics for Kaos GL, while it has been fighting for the rights of LGBT( Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans) individuals since 1994 in Turkey.
Two efforts of Kaos GL are emphasized in the statement on this point:
‘Making LGBT individuals ,who are discursively and de facto externalized from academy/university by the present dominant ideology in Turkey, visible.’
’ Criticizing the practice of science which ignores the sexual identities that are different than the dominant one.’
It is reminded that Kaos GL has questioned the dominant gender regime with the contributions from the academy and added: ‘ It has served to make heterosexism, heteronormativity, homophobia and transphobia problematize scientifically and discussed on academic level.’ in the invitation of ‘Wednesday Workshops’.
‘The studies carried out within and outside the University should be collective’
In the statement of ‘Wednesday Workshops’ which remarks that LGBT and Queer studies in university are still inadequate, a call is issued for making the studies collective ‘ in order to make heterosexism and homophobia comprehensive academic and political problematic.
‘Today, LGBT and Queer Studies in Academy/university are still not able to reach a certain point. Because the students or academicians who want to bring up or study this subject, may face reaction in various ways and at different levels. In this context, in order to make heterosexism and homophobia become comprehensive academic and political problematic, taking a step forward by making the studies carried out within and outside university collective imposes itself as an obligation.’
