Kaos GL's Yıldız Tar answered questions about sexual orientation and gender identity in a webinar organized by medical students from Ankara.
The Başkent Medical Students' Association organized a webinar on sexual orientation and gender identity. Yesterday (April 6th) Kaos GL Media and Communication Program Coordinator Yıldız Tar answered questions from medical students from various universities in Ankara.
Yıldız Tar explained the fundamental concepts regarding sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression. After explaining how fundamental rights and freedoms of LGBTI+'s are violated from a historical perspective; Tar interactively answered many questions from medical students on various subjects from access to the right to health to constitutional equality, from "conversion therapy" to the role of medical professionals in the sex reassignment process.
Questions
Some of the questions that Tar answered were:
*What kind of problems do LGBTI individuals face while receiving medical treatment or routine examinations? What do they request from physicians?
*What kind of advocacy or awareness activities we can hold on intersex and asexuals, who are kind of overlooked in sense of advocacy?
*How should we treat our friends when they tell us that they are not straight? What kind of behavior can disturb them, even when done in good faith?
*How did the concept of Queer emerge?
*As physician candidates, what can we do to eliminate the abstainment of LGBTI+'s from going to the hospitals due to the negative behavior of some physicians so far?
*What do you think of the coming out process? Do you think it's discriminatory that individuals whose sexual orientation is non-heterosexual are coming out while heterosexuals do not feel such necessity?
*Almost every child in Turkey is growing up in a heterosexual relationship. How do you think this affects children's sexual orientation or gender identity?
*What's the difference between the terms of transvestite and transgender?
*Can you explain the difference between bisexual and pansexual?
*What do you think about the lack of legislation for homosexual marriages in Turkey? Do you think that's going to change?
*What do you think of so-called conversion therapies?
*What do you think of the existence of the Lubunca (Turkish LGBTI+ jargon) Do you think it is discriminatory?
Kaos GL during the Coronavirus pandemic
Kaos GL has postponed all its activities as part of measures taken due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The associations’ consultancy activities, as well as its publishings through KaosGL.org internet newspaper and Kaos GL magazine, are continuing. The activities of the association are held over the internet due to the pandemic.
