GFW’s advisors from the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf region are meeting in Jordan on January 19-22. The agenda is what the last 3 years in the region mean for women.

Global Fund for Women (GFW) Regional Convening presents a range of strategies that women’s and feminist organizations in the region are using to advance women’s rights agenda in their contexts.

With the continuously shifting context in the political and social landscape of the MENA region, it is of great importance to tie the present battle for equality with the decades of struggle and activism led by generations of women’s rights advocates.

The purpose of the GFW regional convening is to share knowledge and experience and strengthen networks. The meeting will provide a space for prominent women’s rights advocates to strategically assess the current challenges in the light of the historical struggle for equality, as well as to identify opportunities for critical intervention. The conference also aims at aligning perspectives of women’s rights advocates in the region to bring about common vision of actions.

Bringing its advisors together, the GFW expresses the following aim in organizing the meeting: “The emphasis is on analyzing aspects of successful networking and collective action – also across movements and beyond individual countries – in challenging political circumstances for asserting women’s human rights.”

The GFW advisor and Kaos GL representative Nevin Oztop and Hoda Elsadda, one of the 50 appointed working on the new Egyptian Constitution, will be taking place in a panel discussion on “Organizing for Women’s Human Rights in MENA” on January 20, 2014.

Second day of the program focuses on media and education as tools to advance women’s activism on political empowerment, zero violence, economic empowerment and sexual and reproductive health and rights
